What Is Colorectal Cancer?

Colorectal cancer care

Colorectal cancers include tumors of the colon and rectum, and their incidence is rising in India—especially with increasing westernization of diet and lifestyle.

These cancers affect both men and women, but rectal cancer is more commonly seen in men.

When detected early, colorectal cancer is highly treatable and often curable.

Know the Risk Factors

Colorectal cancer is linked to:

  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • High consumption of red or processed meat
  • Low dietary fiber
  • High-calorie, low-nutrient diets
  • Genetic or familial syndromes like Lynch syndrome or FAP

A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and regular physical activity significantly reduces your risk.

Symptoms: Don’t Miss the Early Clues

Right-Sided Colon Cancer
  • Anemia (low hemoglobin)
  • Melena (black, tarry stools)
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal bloating or lump
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Changes in bowel habits

Left-Sided Colon & Rectal Cancer

  • Bleeding in stools
  • Abdominal pain or fullness
  • Constipation or altered bowel habits
  • Mucus discharge
  • Unintended weight loss

Don’t dismiss rectal bleeding as just piles. Always seek evaluation with a stool test and colonoscopy.

How I Evaluate Colorectal Symptoms

When you consult me, here’s what I do:

rectal exam

Clinical abdominal examination and per rectal exam

colonoscopy

Colonoscopy – endoscopic examination of the entire large intestine

If any polyp or tumor is seen, a biopsy is done

ct-scan

Contrast-enhanced CT scan of the abdomen, pelvis, and chest screening

tumor-marker

Tumor marker testing: Serum CEA

Treatment Strategies

Colon Cancer

Treated with surgical removal of the cancerous segment (right or left hemicolectomy)

Followed by adjuvant chemotherapy based on pathology findings

Rectal Cancer

If detected early: Surgery first

Most cases (moderate to advanced stage):

Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (treatment before surgery)

Followed by surgical resection
